Chiropractic therapy is primarily used to treat musculoskeletal and related problems, especially pain and functional limitations in the spine, joints, and muscles. The conditions most commonly and successfully treated include back pain, neck pain, headaches, and certain nerve-related pain syndromes.

Musculoskeletal and spine-related conditions

  • Lower back pain
This is the condition with the strongest evidence for chiropractic care. Spinal manipulation and related techniques can reduce pain and improve function in acute, subacute, and many cases of chronic low back pain.
  • Upper back and mid-back pain
Pain between the neck and lower back, often related to posture, muscle strain, or joint stiffness, is frequently managed with mobilization, adjustments, and soft-tissue work
  • Neck pain
Chiropractic care is commonly used for neck pain from strain, poor posture, or minor injury (including whiplash). Gentle mobilization, soft-tissue therapy, and posture exercises are often part of treatment,

Herniated or bulging discs
When a disc irritates nearby nerves, chiropractors may use controlled spinal adjustments, traction/decompression, and rehabilitative exercises to reduce symptoms and improve mobility. Care is usually conservative and coordinated with other medical providers when needed.

  • Sciatica
Sciatic nerve pain (burning, shooting pain down the leg) due to disc issues or joint dysfunction can be addressed with spinal adjustments, decompression techniques, and adjunct modalities like heat/cold therapy or ultrasound.
  • Scoliosis and posture problems
While chiropractic cannot “fix” structural scoliosis, it may help improve posture, reduce associated pain, and improve function in people with scoliosis or poor posture from prolonged sitting or “text neck”.

Joint and extremity conditions

  • Shoulder, hip, knee, and other joint pain.
Chiropractors often treat non-surgical joint pain related to biomechanics, overuse, or mild arthritis, using mobilization, soft-tissue techniques, and exercise prescription.
  • Arthritis (osteoarthritis)
For osteoarthritis of the spine and joints, gentle mobilization and targeted exercises can help maintain mobility and reduce pain. Care is typically part of a broader management plan alongside medical treatment and lifestyle changes.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and wrist/hand issues
Some chiropractors use soft-tissue work, joint mobilization, and ergonomic advice to reduce nerve irritation and symptoms in carpal tunnel syndrome, though evidence is more limited.
  • Overuse and sports injuries
Chiropractic care is often used for strain, sprain, and overuse injuries in athletes, focusing on restoring movement, reducing pain, and preventing recurrence with rehab exercises.

Headaches and related symptoms

  • Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches
Headaches arising from neck muscle tension or joint dysfunction often improve with spinal manipulation, soft-tissue therapy, and posture correction.
  • Migraines (as part of a broader plan)
While chiropractic cannot cure migraines, some patients report reduced frequency or intensity when headaches are linked to neck dysfunction; care is usually combined with medical management.

Other conditions sometimes addressed

  • Whiplash and minor accident injuries
After car accidents or similar events, chiropractors may treat neck and back pain, muscle strain, and joint dysfunction using mobilization, soft-tissue therapy, and exercises.
  • Muscle spasms and tension
Soft-tissue techniques, stretching, and adjustments can help reduce muscle tightness and spasms, improving comfort and function.
  • Pregnancy-related discomfort
Some chiropractors provide gentle care for pregnancy-related back, pelvic, and hip pain, using modified techniques and focusing on safe, comfortable movement.

Important limitations

Chiropractic therapy is not a treatment for infections, cancers, serious systemic diseases, or acute neurological emergencies (e.g., stroke, severe spinal cord compression). Conditions with red-flag symptoms (fever, unexplained weight loss, night pain, bowel/bladder dysfunction, severe weakness) require medical evaluation and possibly imaging or surgery rather than chiropractic care alone.
